1883-S $5 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. Well struck and rich yellow gold in coloration. Light abrasions in the fields do not diminish the attractive eye appeal of this uncirculated example. A mere 83,200 half eagles were struck at San Francisco in 1883, a fraction of mintage figures that routinely reached into the millions for other issues. Scarce in correctly graded mint state and quite undervalued. PCGS has not graded a single example finer than MS63. PCGS population of 19 in MS62 with only 8 finer (PCGS # 8363) .

Due to the attractive semi-reflective nature of the fields, a few abrasions are noticeable in the fields. A choice and original example of a relatively scarce Carson City half eagle. An issue that rarely comes finer than the MS62 grade and the second to last year that the Carson City Mint produced half eagle gold coinage. PCGS population of 40 in AU-58 with only 58 finer (PCGS # 8380) .

1893-CC $5 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-62. A high quality example of a Carson City example seldom seen in pleasing mint state condition, or any mint state condition for that matter. Often, this issue comes heavily dipped and "lifeless" but not this crusty little devil. Rich yellow surfaces are finely granular and have an original delicate frost. The only marks are some trivial hairlines and they truly are quite faint. The mintmark is tilted down to the left. A frosty, choice example that bidders should pay special attention to as there are only 2 MS-63's at PCGS and only 4 MS64's as finest (PCGS # 8384) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 2,800.

1894-S $5 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-61 PQ. One of the scarcest half eagles from the San Francisco Mint in the late 19th century. A totally original example with rose and olive highlights. Well struck and unquestionably mint state in condition. Relatively undervalued in this grade and with this level of eye appeal. Only a thin hairline scratch on the cheek is worth mentioning. We feel this specimen is choice for the grade and should be given close inspection. PCGS population of 3 in MS-61, 4 in MS-62, 1 in MS-63 and 1 in MS-64 as finest (PCGS # 8564) .

1895-S $5 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58 PQ. A flashy example of this low population and conditionally rare issue. Only 112,000 half eagles were produced at San Francisco this year and the survival rate in mint state is quite low. The present coin is conservatively graded and is more realistically an uncirculated coin with light hairlines. PCGS has graded only 8 in AU-58 with a tiny figure of only 12 finer. While any rare gold dealer will tell you the 1895-S is rare in mint state, prices have not reflected this known fact and we consider this a strong buy. In old green holder. (PCGS # 8391) .
Estimated Value $900 - 1,000.

1905 $5 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. The production of proof gold in the half eagle series was its heaviest from 1900 to 1905, a combined mintage for those years of 930 proofs. For the 1905 issue, only 108 were minted and over the years many have been lost or impaired. The present gem has sharp contrast between mirrored fields and semi-frosted devices on both obverse and reverse. The radiating luster is accented by sparkling metal flow lines. A few random hairline scratches in the right field are the only marks. A diagnostic for the issue, the top of the 5 in the date has been recut, visible with 6x magnification. An important offering of the Finest Known cameo example graded by PCGS! PCGS population of 1 in PR-65CAM with none finer (PCGS # 88500) .

1907 $5 Gold Liberty. NGC graded MS-68. A serious condition rarity in this superb gem grade and Tied for Finest Known! The surfaces and skin are so original that the rich gold coloration has faint hints of blue in protected areas. Liberty's device is strong and the metal flow on the cheek has a velvety appearance that shifts under illumination (a look seen only on the finest rare gold). Reverse quality is just as impressive and reassures the bidder that they are bidding on one of the Finest from the whole Coronet Liberty Head half eagle series. Identified by a small mint made planchet depression to the lower right of star 6 (0.5mm).

While 626,100 half eagles were struck at Philadelphia in 1907, survival rates drop off dramatically in grades above MS-64. Most would find it difficult to locate a nice and properly graded MS-66 example let alone trying to find an example as impressive and dignified as this specimen. Bidders will have to "step-up" in order to acquire this beauty. Population 2, tied for finest graded.
